[gnso-idn-wg] Role of liaisons; What other topics in RN-WG are germane to IDN-WG

Sophia,

Thank you for raising these points.

If you do find areas in the Reserved Names WG that are deserving of input
from the IDN WG, I anticipate (and hope!) you will bring those to the fore,
and our WG membership will be able to adequately think about whether we
should provide input or not. The statement below "expert advice & input on
geographic and geopolitical names" was a direct result of our WG conference
call on Feb 22.

I view liaisons as the primary messengers and summarizers of activity
between the groups they liaise with. Liaisons will also attend all of the
other WG meetings, and actively peruse WG mailing lists and extract items of
value that may be shared with our WG. Experts are called upon as needed,
and generally will provide advice on areas they have specific knowledge and
experience and expertise in.

As liaison to the RN-WG, I believe it is your task to:

(a) provide a summary of discussions in the RN-WG as they pertain to the IDN
WG;

(b) share RN-WG documents or other reports that are deserving of attention
from the IDN WG;

(c) provide the Chair appropriate agenda items to add to future IDN WG
calls;

(d) advise the RN WG on major developments in the IDN-WG that the RN-WG
should consider in its deliberations;

(e) other communications activities as appropriate between the two WGs.

I view liaisons as the primary voice of one WG to the other, and as a
liaison, their role is to present their WG's point of view rather than their
own.

Regards,

Ram

Subject: Re: [gnso-idn-wg] Proposal on providing input from the IDN Working
Group to Reserved Names Working Group on Geopolitical Names

Maria,

Thank you.

The IDN Working Group will offer expert advice and input on geographic and
geopolitical names, as they apply to IDN, to the Reserved Names Working
Group of the GNSO Council

I refer this to the WG and the Chair. I am not sure why we (IDN-WG) would
be selectively providing INPUT in the area mentioned above only!. It is
true that it way my first meeting of the RN-WG this past Saturday in LA, but
I have learned that there are more areas that ONE , as mentioned above that
may require consulting with the IDN-WG.

Therefore, may I ask kindly what the basis was doe the narrow selection
above?

Second, I am also new to the 'Liaison' function, I am appointed by our
Chair, RAM Mohan, to be a Liaison of the IDN-WG to the RN-WG above. Can
someone also clarify to me what 'Liaisons' are charged to do in this
instances >

Third, initially, RAM is selected as expert advise, so is Tina, because she
is on the cal. Now, the above proposal calls for the whole group to provide
'expert advice', which makes sense, if there needs to be 'experts' in the
group on that area.

What I am finally asking is perhaps a definition of the already 'narrow
roles' defined and if there is a decision to expand that, then the IDN-WG
should also be preview to all the RN group work, because there are more
concerns to the issues of IDN in the work of the RN-WG than just the above.

Sophia

Thanks

Sophia

  Dear members of the GNSO IDN Working Group,

Below is a proposal to the IDN Working Group that was discussed on its call
on 20 February, 2007. It is for review and discussion by Working Group
members , to see if it meets with support for implementation.

Proposal to the IDN Working Group:

The IDN Working Group will offer expert advice and input on geographic and
geopolitical names, as they apply to IDN, to the Reserved Names Working
Group of the GNSO Council.

This proposal was made by the Chair, Ram Mohan, and seconded by Marilyn
Cade, on the call of the IDN Working Group that took place on 20 February,
2007. No disagreement with the proposal was voiced on the call, and it was
agreed to put this proposal to the mailing list of this working group to see
if it meets with support.

Please circulate to this list your view on the proposal by Friday, 2nd
March, 2007.

Many thanks,
