It seems that .dir is too narrow. Re: Single TLD extension proposals: There is a
delicate balance: 1) on the one hand, registrars or zone file licensees cannot remain
profitable if they are forced to access too many registries [technologically & financially
it would place a tremendous burden on current registrars needing to access numerous
registry databases in order to offer the new TLDs to their existing customers & thus,
stay competitive], and 2) on the other hand, we have the example of Network Solutions
and see the abuses of power that are the result of concentrating too much control
in the hands of one entity.
