Why has ICANN not included domain name price caps in the latest version of its
new gtld guidebook? This is necessary to protect registrants from the danger
of .tv-style tiered pricing. If price caps are not imposed, what is to stop
registries/registrars from pricing high value generic keywords differently than
relatively low/no value keywords and names? What is to prevent the registries
behind .info and .biz from doing the same? And ultimately the .com, .net and
.org registries? Businesses that paid 7.95 for their domain could find the
registration fee go up to millions of dollars per year. Owners of generic .com
domains may find their registration fee of 7.95 shoot up to thousands or 100's
of thousands of dollars or even more. This could destroy many businesses at a
time of great economic fragility. Just the possibility is very unsettling and
makes for an uncertain future for internet business.
Why has ICANN consistently ignored this obvious important issue that the
internet community, save for apparently ICANN itself and a few registries, have
completely opposed?
Where is our voice?
