I find it rather amazing that in the face of virtually unanimous opposition
to these contracts, ICANN, after only a few cosmetic revisions to these
lopsided agreements, is going to seriously consider prematurely approving
this giveaway and selling all domain registrants down the river in the
process. These contracts should not even be on the agenda prior to the San
Paolo meeting and the fact that they are gives the appearance that ICANN is
intent on ramming them through regardless of the obvious community sentiment
against them. It is also clear that the organization is ignoring the sound
advice provided by Senator Ted Stevens in his letter to the Department of
Commerce Sept. 29th in which he stated the need for ICANN to "demonstrate
improvement on issues of accountability and transparency if it is to be ?a
lasting and sustainable institution? and to consider the concerns of the
broad Internet community before making key decisions. I very much believe
that ICANN's future hangs in the balance and that the organization's actions
on this issue will be the weight that will tip the scales in one direction
or the other.
