Even the expanded term is unfamiliar at this point (Certainly less so than
IDN for example). And among an international audience, we ought to be aware
that IRD refers to the:

Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in France,
Inland Revenue Department in New Zealand
Instituto de Radioproteção e Dosimetria (Portugese)

*and* - my personal favorite -

Ice-Rafted Detritus

(pebbles dropped on sea floor by icebergs)
