ICANN has enough issues on its hands without wading into this
internal Spanish political controversy. If they give a TLD to
the Catalan region, where will it stop? Will each of the three
linguistic regions of Switzerland be entitled to claim a TLD of
their own; will Quebec get its own TLD but none of the other
Canadian provinces since they all share the same language and
culture, etc., etc. This is simply a ploy to get an
endorsement and some credibility for a nationalist movement
not content to accept the country it is a part of based on
historical fact.
To take the example of Yugoslavia, everyone got along very well
for 45 years following the Second World War, until Germany and
the other European countries decided to recognise the
independence of Slovenia, then Croatia, then Bosnia. If they
hadn't done that, the world could have been spared the
bloodshed that has consumed the Balkans for the last 15 years.
The Catalan region is a part of Spain, full stop. ICANN, resist
the suggestion to take sides in the break-up of
another sovereign country!
