Reasons why .XXX TLD is a good idea
With all the overwhelming posts rejecting the .XXX domain, I thought it might be good to have some voice of reason, some clarity as to why .XXX is a good idea. The .XXX TLD will open up the domain namespace. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Right now, websites have to be clever in creating new porn domains, concatenating words together, making them longer until they can find one that isn't taken. These longer names are harder to remember and longer to type. A urine fetish website can now get yellow.XXX that previously before .XXX, only a yellow pages website had the name. More and more porn sites can now open up, going for the names that were long-lost in the .COM namespace. There could be Muslim.XXX for Muslim specific sex preferences. Christian.XXX could be a porn site for the type that go to strip clubs on Saturday night, and church on Sunday morning. A .XXX extension will be an easy to spot warning for kids to stay away ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When kids see the .XXX extension in a search result, their proper upbringing and parental guidance will be fully tested as the child will know not to even click on the link, for fear that mom would be watching and they would get less Christmas presents because Santa knew they were being naughty at looking at naughty websites. Those big warning messages about adult content and being over 18 to enter are just not clear enough for kids. Kids identify with characters like in cartoons, not lengthy legalese statements. .XXX would be like a cartoon character that tells them to be good boys and girls and to stay away because only big boys and girls should be looking in there. .XXX will stop the porn .COM websites ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Filtering software will be able to lookup the IP of the .XXX website and block by the IP. Since porn websites usually host many domains on the same IP, including their .COM equivalent, filtering software will be able to block them all. Some webmaster who decides that it is cool to get a .XXX domain and puts it on a virtual webhost like at GoDaddy (with thousands of non-adult websites hosted on the same IP) where he doesn't even have any porn pics, would all get blocked because his .XXX domain shared the same IP as others. Who cares if those other sites get blocked.. they shouldn't have been hosting on the same server as that deviant. Hopefully, the porners aren't that smart to catch on to this and won't put their .COM website on one IP and the .XXX website on another. The purchase of .XXX domains will help fund child protection organizations ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some child protection organizations will be given grants/funding from the proceeds of .XXX domains to help with their laudable mission of protecting children. Maybe playgrounds and playscapes that are purchased with this .XXX money could have a sign put up that says 'Your porn dollars at work", or "This play area paid for by porn".
Everyone knows that the minute .XXX gets approved that every porn site in the world will switch to .XXX because it's the "responsible" thing to protect children. It is with this 100% shifting to .XXX, that filtering programs can easily identify a porn site since it would have the .XXX extension. No longer will websites that operate just on an IP number, or using other extensions or operating in countries that don't subscribe to US policies, cause problems. For once, there will be universal unity and agreement. Just by saying that .XXX will protect children makes it so. Better to tax the money making pornographers to pay for the .XXX domains than have non-porn websites pay to have a .KIDS TLD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Since porn websites are making so much money, they should be the one to pay for the protection measures that .XXX afford. .KIDS would certainly be much more effective in its whitelisting approach, that only approved kid-friendly sites would get a .KIDS extension. But why tax the websites who already paid for their .COM domain names for the sins of the pornographers? The Robin Hood strategy of financing child protection is exactly what Senator Lincoln and other similar porn tax bills have proposed. .XXX will stop Child Porn websites because they wouldn't be allowed to get a .XXX domain ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No one wants the Child Porn websites around, so those pedos will be excluded from .XXX and usually from .COM as well, since they use those free web hosting places to put their websites up one day and down another anyways. And we all know that its impossible to get a .COM name with the word Lolita or Beastility in it.. since that would just be too obvious what might be on that website, such that .COM registrars already offer us that level of protection. A .XXX registrar would allow us to all sleep at night, knowing they would be doing their jobs of making sure that the really bad stuff didn't get a domain name.
With laws being proposed by Congress on the mandatory use of .XXX for porn sites, it will finally more "legitimize" porn, especially since porn is already "legit", but it's always good to have government approval. So the government will acknowledge the .XXX identifier and all those who don't like smut, won't be shocked the next time they visit an innocently looking .COM website and find porn.
There are many reasons why .XXX is a good thing. There's something here for everyone. So ignore all those adult webmasters who are against .XXX Ignore the fact that one of the ICANN requirements for a TLD is that it must represent the wishes of the community, to have built up constituency over the group that the TLD presides over. There are many people outside of the porn industry who think .XXX is a good idea, so it makes perfect sense to use ICANN to corral them all into a virtual red light district and use the TLD as a way of controlling the content. Better to force one's personal moral and ethical standards onto another group of people, and the kicker, make them pay for that containment, and use the proceeds from the .XXX domain transactions to do good. For those that couldn't read into the satire of the actual commentary presented, the quick summary: .XXX SHOULD NOT BE APPROVED. |
