But the smaller people DO have a chance at the "land run" as you call it. If you
consider IOD as a good runner-up (personally, I think they have a strong claim over
.web than ANY new registry that shows up with untested databases)--there are still
plenty of strong .web domains to be found on webtld.com.And the land-run is still
minimal.
NOW is the time for "the average Joe" to get his domain. So long as he
is willing to take the risk that it might NOT be approved.

I know no
programming or script technology. But if they cut the ribbon on a fresh database,
with the WHOLE world watching, the Average Joe doesnt stand a chance.

you to plunk down a few bucks while you have the greatest chance: now--Even WITH
the risk.
