If your reasoning is correct, then *NO* restricted or special purpose TLD should be approved since they a forciori have direct or indirect 'social policy choices'. Allowing a .edu for educational institutions is a social policy choice.

Sorry, but the only way to avoid such choices are to evaluate proposals on their technical merit (ICANN's responsibility) only.

Assuming a restricted .kids is granted, you or your kids are not obliged to use them. You have the choice. Some parents *REFUSE* to let their kids on the internet because of its bad reputation. A restricted .kids allowing for parents to chose the sites is much better than no access at all.
