quote from
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14818-2003Sep28.html

' "One would hope that something of this magnitude would be properly
covered in the contracts," Cerf said. It would be in nobody's interest
to take control of .com away from VeriSign, Cerf said, '

Contrary to the above quote, it would be in most people's interest to
take control of .com away from Verisign. The same goes for .net too.
Verisign has demonstrated contempt for all users of the internet by
implementing SiteFinder, and should be relieved of any role in
administering any .gtld. By removing
Verisign and their wildcards, ICANN may be able to preserve what trust
there is left in ICANN and regulatory processes. Without the removal of
Verisign, all bets are off.

So, just what *is* Vint Cerf smoking? (my apologies to the NANOG group
for appropriating the subject line.)
