VeriSign's recent, unilateral action should (and appears to be) harmful
to the internet community for the following reasons.
(1) it does nothing to contribute to public good.
(2) it has the appearance of abuse-of-power, due to the fact the
verisign controls DNS, and is using this control to move users directly
to their marketing pitch who have either mis-typed and address, or
entered an address that doesn't exist, thus, this is nothing more than
VeriSign taking over the undefined areas of the Internet, and co-opting
it to further enrich VeriSign via directing traffic to their marketing
pages.
(3) it has the potential to reduce competition from other registrars.
It's essentially a landgrab by a malevolent monopolizer.
The key phrases are "abuse-of-power" and "redce competition". This
wildcard program should be halted immediatly, and VeriSign should be
severly punished.
i for one will not do business with VeriSign, and will advise my clients
to do the same.
