I second Wendy's suggestion that if someone considers uniformity of
opinion or a unified public face a value, he/she should come out and
explain it. I certainly do not think that way, nor do I think that my
statement said that (I did use some of those words but not in that
combination). Perhaps non-native English users like myself can cause
unintended misunderstandings. What I was saying was that if we are going
to set up an elaborate Chair+2 Vice Chairs structure, we should avoid a
situation where ALAC, already accused of failure and ineffectiveness,
displays public quarrels among its own elected officers. This is specially
important in the outreach function, where despite the diversity of opinion
that prevails, the pursuit of some action plan seems absolutely necessary
for the survival of ALAC. Whoever takes up the mantle of this daunting
task will need the support of ALAC Chair and other members. I should
perhaps add that I will not be a candidate either for this function or for
the Chair.
