Even greedy dot tv only raises prices by 5% per year. I believe ICANN folded and as usual business interests outweighed the interests of individual users and domain name holders. This is becoming predictable for ICANN. In all negotians, whichever way to do something will benefit business interests the most is always chosen over the way that would benefit individual users most. Granting Verisign a monopoly over and over again is just one of the reasons many in the world are thinking that an International organization might be a better option than ICANN. I don't think that an International org CAN do better, but ICANN is making it very difficult to defend that position.
