Re: [soac-mapo] Independent Objector

To the extent that an IO role is recommended/retained by this CWG, I would urge
that there be a clear and specific recommendation regarding his/her
accountability, e.g. term limits, removal and appeal procedures etc. Given our
time crunch, these may have to remain mere suggestions but I for one - and I
suspect many in NCSG as well - would be VERY hesitant to support an IO process
where explicit safeguards are not at least recommended.
Thanks,
Mary

Why can't such a group file an objection through At-Large (as we have begun
discussing)? A separate objector is not needed.
The part of Independent Objector that I have a problem with is "Independent".
There needs to be a "somebody" who takes responsibility for this objection -
who can say they are allegedly harmed by this gltld's creation. Creating an
"independent" objector gives enormous power to a new office that is ripe for
abuse as it is "independent" of any accountability.

If we want to help the poor file an objection they are entitled to file, but
cannot afford, why not just recommend that they don't have to pay the fee (a
financial hardship exemption)?
Because financial hardship is but one of many obstacles to communities, that
may be impacted, that are not aware of ICANN (let alone how it works).
The existence of the IO addresses a number of serious non-financial
accessibility obstacles, and is an acknowledgement of ICANN's accountability to
non-insiders.
