Steven,I agree partly with what you are saying; the use of GTLD's simply confuses
the Internet namespace. This is especcially apparent outside of the US where companies
wish to use a .com because of the hype surrounding the dot.com revolution.
I would
therefore say that organisations should be encouraged to use the correct country
code and domain suitable for their organisation. For example, .co.uk in the UK, and
even .co.us instead of .com for US companies.
Where I disagree with you is that
I believe the current trade mark system is far too complicated to migrate to the
web, and I would suggest a compromise where there are perhaps 6-7 additional sub-domains
under each country code to enable differentiation between different industries.
