I think the subject says it all. The crowing over the .tv domain in this forum is
a classic example.The new TLDs have the potential to be useful. How that potential
is realised is completely up to ICANN and we shall see what they make of it.
They
can either forget that they are a non profit organisation (they are registered in
.org aren't they.) assuming responsibility for the management of the domain name
system or they can *assume responsibility* and actually *manage the domain name system*.
In
one case we will see some organisation and management of the world wide DNS system
in the other case we will see abdication of responsibility, chaos in the new name
spaces and utter failure on the part of ICANN. The ball is in their court and they
are being watched.
