Friedrich brings up an interesting point regarding "trademark" squatters however
this is much different than "cybersquatting".Anybody can register a domain for
$15. There are no regulations, no restrictions to meet.
The trademark process is
different however. It is a lot more involved and expensive than buying a domain name.
Not only do you have to pay fees and file forms for a trademark, you must also meet
requirements. Specifically, these require you to show actual use of the name in commerce.
The ways you can do this are listed on the USPTO website. In short, somebody could
go through the trouble and pay all the fees, fake use of the mark, and register a
trademark to sell at a later time, but the cost and time involved make it unlikely.
Take into account that a good generic domain name is worth much more than an unbranded
trademark, and you'll see that by far that "cybersquatting" is a much more appealing
business.
