Perhaps it is the language barrier, but it sounds prejudicial to me too.  Only during the first stage is an independent candidate self-nominated; after the candidate gathered support from members from at least two states, the candidate is member-nominated.

It would be perhaps be more accurate to clearly show who supported the candidates by calling them member-nominated vs. committee-nominated.
