Inevitable monopoly? |

>>On the other hand, if ICANN selected Neustar, .Web will be jeopardized because
NeuStar, Inc can be bought over by NSI/VeriSign. This is also the same for IODesign.<< >It's
not so far fetched to believe that consolidation would occur at the registry level
with the introduction of new TLDs.< >At least with Afilias, we won't have to
worry about the likes of an NSI coming in and buying a new monopoly, since each member
can own a maximum of 11% of the company.< A rather fatalistic viewpoint. To save
the Internet from an NSI monopoly, there is no choice other than to grant domain
registries to a company partly owned and controlled by NSI? Continuing
the theme of wild hypotheticals, what if some party performs a mass buyout of Afilias?
You believe if a company can be taken over, it shouldn't be granted the right
to run a registry? How many businesses can claim such invincibility? John Webster
