Subject: Support SITA for ".air" TLD Application

Airline Business has already established itself as one of the largest components of e-commerce but the industry is still looking at how best to take advantage of the New Economy, while preserving the integrated, seamless service it provides worldwide. Many consumers remain reluctant to interact with Airlines sites or purchase services over the web because of uncertainty about the reputation and reliability of “. com” website operators, who may be geographically remote, and whose qualifications and capabilities have not been verified by any independent party.

By screening “. air” website operators to assure compliance with transparent and objective criteria relevant to the conduct of e-commerce, SITA’s innovative proposal will add value for both consumers and businesses. Defining and implementing a structured domain name architecture to enable our community to control directly the delivery of its own TLDs and enhance the security and efficiency of air transport will also give consumers the confidence necessary if e-business is to compete on an equal footing with traditional brick-and-mortar alternatives.

I believe that SITA is the appropriate entity to sponsor the airline industry’s TLD. SITA has served for decades as a Global Airlines Communication and Data Processing Service Provider. This enabled the Airline industry to efficiently meet the needs of its customers. SITA’s acknowledged strengths include World Wide Network Coverage and the Noticeable Market Share, Thus, it is ideally positioned to perform the screening and verification functions which lie at the heart of the proposal and which are notably absent from today’s “com” environment.

I strongly encourage ICANN to grant the SITA application. This will not only enable the merits of this innovative concept to be proven, but may also have direct applications to other sectors of the new economy in the future.
