The GSM Association is a non-profit global organisation responsible for the development, deployment and evolution of the GSM standard for digital wireless communications and for the promotion of the GSM platform.  GSM is the “Global System for Mobile communications”. The GSM Association acts as a focussed forum where organisations can contribute to the development of the GSM platform to the benefit of our member organisations and ultimately GSM wireless customers throughout the world.

The Association currently represents the interests of almost 500 organisations worldwide consisting of second and third generation mobile network operators, satellite network operators, regulatory bodies and key suppliers to the GSM industry.  Membership of the Association covers 160 countries spanning western, eastern and central Europe, India and the Asia Pacific regions, the Middle East, Africa and North and South America. The GSM Association’s members provide digital GSM wireless services to more than 380 million customers across 5 continents of the world.  In addition, the GSM system accounts for approximately 67% of the global digital mobile communications market.

The GSM Association as a world leading wireless representative body, has taken a keen interest in the ICANN process for allocating new Top Level Domains. The GSM Association has reviewed the proposal by Nokia Corporation with regard to the .mobile top level domain and have actively engaged with Nokia in this regard. The GSM Association strongly supports the proposed .mobile TLD and we look forward to working as part of the team to make the .mobile top level domain a success.

Mr. Pat O’Flaherty,
Executive Director – Marketing & Information Services
GSM Association.
