What if your proposal(s)
were to be instituted within every existing national ccTLD Registry? (At least, those
which have not sold their interests in governing their domain space) as has already
been done for example with: myname.co.uk? Every citizen, of every country in the
world, who wished to do business (found a club or association etc...) under a certain
name, could have a first come first serve -quite equitable- opportunity to acquire
a desired name address. In that circumstance, a conflict with a trademark in a given
country could be acknowledged via a national trademark database -already in existence
for most developed nations. In the case of less developed countries a slightly
longer process can be expected in the submission and processing of applications,
with recognizable efforts actively being pursued to modernize respective procedures
in each case. Thus, we could envision a situation in which numerous commercial
entities around the world (both small or large) could have a useful (i.e. desirable)domain
address, something akin to myname.co.uk. Otherwise, we could add TLD domains
ad infinitum and there would always be the argument of the disgruntled and dispossessed
clamouring for more. At some point, the magnitude of the namespace has to be
defined and delineated, don't you think? I think that each national registry
participating in a Convention of the sort outlined above is the best way to stimulate
economic activity and at the same time assuage big business concerns regarding their
IP. After all, as long as language is the primary mode of human communication,
we will always have problems with its control.
