Subject: ICANN auction only way to avoid stampede on day one

I'd like to say a few words in support of Georg Panzer’s proposal for an ICANN auction. This is something I have been wanting to propose myself in this forum. If you open a jewelry store and put the same low price on all your wares, from diamond rings to worthless pieces of colored glass, on day one you will face a mad, unmanagable stampede. The diamonds will be gone within hours and the colored glass rings and beads will be all that's left on the shelves for late comers. The value of domain names is today determined by the market and for ICANN to sell, say,  business.web for 35 dollars only to have a speculator turn around and resell it for 3,5 million does not strike me as fair. The auction proceeds can be used for the further development of the Internet or even for some other worthwhile purposes.
