      My experience comes from being a mom of 3 and being a school volunteer for 13 years.  During the time since my oldest child began school and now as that child plans for college, internet usage has grown considerably as a tool for kids conducting their own research. 
The challenge of keeping the internet not only safe but useful and well-rounded for children is daunting.  Let that challenge not stop us from creating something children need but embrace that challenge and do all we can to ensure that our children have global access to what is needed, fun, and interesting, yet still be an area where our children are not compromised.
Kids will continue to use the interenet at school and at home while inappropriate sites will continue to invade "safe" areas.
