Subject: Support for .co-op TLD

The establishment of a .co-op TLD for the internet would be a great
step forward, both for the worldwide Co-operative Movement (other
contributors tot his forum have already given indications of the size
and importance of that movement), and for the internet itself, as an
infrastructure which seeks to serve the needs of that global
community.
The unique values and principles on which the Co-operative Movement is
founded set co-operatives apart as clearly different from both private
sector and public sector organisations. Co-operatives occupy a unique
space in the ecology of organisational structures in the world, and
consequently deserve to be recognised by this new TLD.
Increasingly the internet is being seen as a commercial space, a place
for consumers and businesses to trade. Co-operatives have for a long
time been seen by many as their preferred option as trading partners,
as they are more well liked and better trusted than conventional
businesses. The approval of .co-op as a TLD would again enable
co-operatives to be more easily identified in the complex internet
space by potential trading partners, facilitating ethical trade across
the globe.
