Subject: new TLD .co-op should be created

On behalf of the Global Crop Protection Federation (GCPF), I would like to express my support for the creation of top-level domain .co-op by ICANN.

Co-operatives are a unique form of social and economic grouping that empowers producers to engage in the market and to profit directly from it.  In many cases, local co-operatives greatly reinforce the fabric of the local community.  This socio-economic grouping is not accurately reflected by commercial (.com), organisation (.org) or network (.net) nomenclature.

In addition the membership of co-operatives world-wide has been estimated as high as one-half the world population, making clear the numerical logic of the argument to create such a domain.  Indeed, this new TLD might indeed help lighten the demand on some of the fairly saturated TLDs like .com and .org.

The effect of TLD .co-op on electronic commerce can only be positive as customers will know in advance that they are supporting a co-op and will feel comfortable having a clear idea of the type of enterprise they are supporting.

The crop protection industry works closely with co-operatives in many of its local Safe Use training programmes.  GCPF works with the International Co-operative Alliance and other agri-food partners to promote the principles of sustainable agriculture in global policy-making.

By raising the profile of co-operatives across the globe, the .co-op TLD may help promote this socially friendly economic grouping and therefore greatly promote sustainable development.
