As President of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), I wish to both personally endorses the proposal for .co-op TLD as well as reiterate the support of the ICA to the proposal.

Co-operatives present an alternative way of doing business - businesses that while being competitive and successful still apply the co-operative principles and values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

By providing co-ops to be able to make themselves more identifiable on the Internet, ICANN will help people from all over the globe to find trusted enterprises.  It will also be helping people not only seek co-operatives, but perhaps even learn more about co-ops.  It may ultimately serve a not only to promote e-commerce with trusted partners but promote the social good by letting people know that they can help themselves.  Co-operative members do everyday.  Through co-op businesses they provide income. Co-ops provide services of every conceivable type - daycare centres, funeral co-ops, food, electricity, health-care, transport, insurance, banking, agriculture - there is a co-op for every activity.   This also means that the .co-op TLD will be cross sectoral and certainly global.  Alone, ICA has  254 members organizations in nearly 100 countries who represent over 760 million individuals.  A community this size, with aims that are similar to those of the Internet itself deserves it own top level domain name.

Roberto Rodrigues
ICA President.
