      I think it is great that the NCBA has proposed .co-op or .coop be established to identify for profit businesses owned primarily by their employees. Clearly, producer/consumer/worker cooperatives are a substantial community in and of themselves and merit this means of being able to identify each other over the Internet.

      If possible, it would be good to include a broader category of worker-owned businesses, ie, those owned through mechanisms like ESOPs (employee stock ownership plans). While not all ESOP owned companies follow the democratic principles of cooperatives, many do. Criteria should be developed to make it possible for those ESOP-owned companies which are controlled and operated by their employees to be identified over the Internet as well.
