Subject: Legacoop, Italy -- support for .co-op

Message:

The National Cooperative Business Association received the following letter of support from Legacoop, a cooperative in Italy and member of the International Co-operative Alliance:

Dear colleagues,

We do believe that it is very important the .co-op top level domain name at international level and we support this proposal for the following reasons:

It represents an effective way to reaffirm in the cyberspace the
co-operative identity, just it takes place in the reality through the work carried out by international and national co-operative organizations.

The Internet, as we know, is not only "virtual", but rather it is a concrete tool of real communication, by which the different subjects and actors of the society, among which the co-operative movement, establish contacts and implement economic and social transactions. Consequently, the .co-op top level domain name represents a further instrument, a necessary and useful one, in order to reaffirm our specificity and peculiarities linked to the co-operative values and principles, which could benefit the whole internet culture.

The .co-op top level domain name  could represent a very helpful domain for million of co-operatives, especially those located in the Developing Countries, taking into consideration the scarcity of existing domains, dueto a sort of "agiotage" which, in some way, private companies, especially of Developed Countries, exercise.

For the above-mentioned reason we think the .co-op domain name is a
fundamental  requisite that cannot be given up for a concrete right to
internet access by all the co-operatives.

Stefania Marcone, ICA Board member
Vanni Rinaldi, Director ICT, Legacoop, Italy
