Without a doubt, co-operatives of all shapes and sizes contribute significantly to the world’s economy. The International Co-operative Alliance alone boasts over 230 member co-operatives from 100 countries, representing 750,000 co-operatives and 725 million
co-operators worldwide. These millions of people are joined by a common purpose and focus through one set of co-operative values and principles. They fully recognize the distinguishing factors that set co-ops apart from other forms of business and organizations. Linking them via .co-op is the only logical step in this era of technology and global communications.

Secondly, co-operatives are recognized worldwide, in urban and rural communities alike, for their economic and social impact. Socially-conscious people seek out co-operatives specifically because of their values and principles. The Internet community has an opportunity to
electronically link the global co-operative movement and help it reach more people. It is also a means of helping protect the movement’s long-standing reputation, both from a business and
social point of view. Co-operatives would be easily identified via a common domain. People - co-operators and non-co-operators - would learn to rely on .co-op to reflect a high level of professionalism among co-operatives sharing that domain. It would also help eliminate other types of businesses from trying to present themselves in a
co-operative light in the growing cyber community.

It’s for these reasons and more that Co-op Atlantic fully supports establishing an Internet domain for co-ops.
