ICANN should make every effort to be absolutely impartial when granting the new tlds and this includes ".web". To not do so would absolutely shake the confidence in its ability to bring some sort of governing order to the internet and also invite government scrutiny. The case of IOdesign and Afilias over the .web tld will be a very good test of ICANN's ability to be fair and impartial. ICANN should positively avoid any conflicts of interest wherever possible. ICANN should quickly adopt a code of ethics if it has not already done so...and that should include a provision that any members/administrators should not be allowed to vote on any matters in which they have any of conflict of interest. To allow any member/administrator to do so would fatally taint ICANN. If IOdesign has properly applied and cannot be proven to be incapable of running the .web registry, then it would appear they have the strongest claim to the .web tld based on their early development of the concept. I would urge all who have an interest in fair play of the development of the internet to write their respective government officials to closely monitor the ICANN process.
