      My point is, Afilias provides no competition, really.   NSI would get a cut of every registration from the other 18 members of Afilias.  It's in their application.  Can you see why 98% of the contributors to this forum regard Afilias/NSI anti-competitive?  It's right there in their application.  You shouldn't begrudge IOD for having a great product and bringing it to market. IOD worked its fanny off for the past several years.  Now the big hairy ape, NSI, marches into the room, at the last minute, to steal the ball.  If NSI wants to sell domain names, they should sell some of the many they are currently just sitting on.   I suppose you find nothing wrong with all the thinly-disguised conflicts of interest looming.
