        Co-operatives are an integral part of society, showing up in
virtually every sector of the economy, in virtually every political
and economic system, and in virtually every country in the world.
Over the last 150 years, co-ops have emerged as groups of people 
seek ways of providing goods and services that are not being supplied
efficiently and effectively by either the private sector or
government. Co-ops are adaptative mechanisms - an important way in
which citizens can respond actively and positively to the
shortcomings they see in the economy and the society around them. As
government increasingly withdraws from the economy and as the private
sector is emphasized more and more, people in both developing and
developed countries can be expected to continue to use co-ops to
address the social and economic problems that will invariably arise.

The creation of a .co-op domain would provide an important virtual
meeting place for co-ops and for people involved in co-ops. The
.co-op address would give coherence to the thousands of co-operatives
around the world. This will become an important domain address, since
it will reach people in virtually every part of the world and in
