As a member of the International Cooperative Alliance, the Cooperative Housing Foundation (CHF) wishes to express its support for the creation of a .co-op top-level domain. The new name may help bolster e-commerce for businesses around the globe.

CHF helps families throughout the world improve their housing and communities. Historically focused on housing, CHF has broadened its work to address community and economic development, infrastructure, income generation, health, and protecting our environment as vital to improving living conditions and sustaining viable communities. In short, we work for communities, habitat, and finance.

CHF's earliest roots, in the 1950s, were building affordable housing in rural America and in low-income neighborhoods of older cities, primarily by organizing local housing cooperatives. In the 1960s the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) asked CHF to apply its models of cooperative housing, microlending, self-help construction, and community organizational development in Central America.

Today, CHF and its 17 field offices have worked in nearly 100 countries worldwide. Successes in building sustainable housing cooperatives and other community-based organizations led CHF to replicate its practices in many countries. CHF has provided building blocks both for housing and democracy throughout the world. The .co-op TDL has the potential to serve as a strong tool to enhance consumer choice and fair competition in the United States and worldwide.

For these reasons, CHF strongly supports .co-op as a new top-level domain (TDL).
