The Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO) files this comment in support of the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA)  proposal to sponsor a “.travel” TLD.

The delivery of travel solutions is fast becoming one of the most visible components of the e-commerce marketplace.  Each day more consumers use this medium to purchase goods and services.  Providers continue to seek to distribute additional offerings.  However, ATPCO believes that the adoption of the Internet as a delivery mechanism has not been as widespread as it is potential would indicate.  This delay is partially rooted in the lack of independently verified and trusted sources of travel-related information, goods and services.  The consumer and suppliers do not have the ability to confidently know that their potential partner is reliable and has a track record in actually providing the promised goods and services.

IATA’s proposal clearly and simply addresses the consumers and suppliers perception of a lack of a trusted accrediting source.  IATA is one of the very, very few neutral, trusted, nonprofit bodies in the travel industry.  It has a long track record balancing the numerous and sometimes competing interesting within our community.  This record, coupled with IATA’s historical legacy of neutrality, makes IATA the logical choice for performing the screening and verification functions, which are crucial components of an internet-centric, travel industry.

ATPCO strongly encourages ICANN to grant the IATA application.
