Subject: Is dot-travel necessary?  The category is too broad for only IATA

IDC's initial question would be "WHY". I'm not sure that the dot-travel TLD is necessary or even desired. Companies have always needed to establish themselves as trusted brands -- and having the dot-travel seal of approval would probably not mean very much. Consumers will need to look at references and other trusted referrals to make up their mind where they'll go for good travel information and booking services.

Assuming, however, that dot-travel would be approved, I'd agree with the many postings arguing that IATA would not be the organization to "approve" such URLs.  Travel is too complicated and diverse to allow one niche trade organization to have so much power.
