You contradict yourself. In a free-for-all, people will be grabbing
at what they can. Consequently, it is statistically improbable that
.web generics would simply, and conveniently, get into the hands
of current .com owners.

How?

Is River.com the only one who will try to get River.web? How about a
million other people for whom that SLD would be ideal.

Since when did "web" refer merely to web design? "web" is for Worldwide Web, which is far more than web design.

I nearly gagged on my Chinese food when I read that statement.
