.xxx and .sex seem like a good
idea at face value but they are not... here is why:1) These extentions will
do nothing to aleviate the perceived shortage of available english or foreign language
names in the popular and readily identifiable .com/net/org name space. (who in their
right mind would want to run a flower shop or other business at freenudegirls.com
anyway? For that matter, what florist would want flowershop.xxx) 2) Well meaning
politicians who do not have a full grasp of the functionality or mechanics of the
internet, do not realise that existing adult .com/net/org/.co.uk/.de/.jp names will
simply get redirected by those who control them, to these new .xxx or .sex extensions.
The individuals and corporations that control the com/net/org versions of adult URLs
realise that they are far too valuable to release back into the namepool. Any effort
to force them to do so will fail miserably due to a combination of litigation and
lack of enforcement. There is an old saying that during the gold rush, those who
profited were not the miners, but the individuals selling the pick axes and shovels.
Today, domain registrars and attorneys play the role of pick axe and shovel salesmen.
While I fully support their efforts and right to do so, I do not think that adding
a controversial and limited scope extention like .XXX or .SEX "in the first
round" is good for an internet namespace that desperately needs more breadth.
