Subject: IATA is the Only Option!

You say ICANN should consider ASTA, ARTA, or ICTA as alternatives to IATA to sponsor the .travel TLD.  But those organizations didn't bother to file applications by the deadline, and so they aren't options available to ICANN!!  Don't you understand that ICANN can only grant new TLDs to companies that applied for them?  They can't just pick another sponsor that doesn't have an application pending.  So ICANN either grants the IATA application, or we will all lose the benefits of .travel altogether.  Awarding it to someone else who failed to file a timely appllication is not a possibility under the ICANN rules.

I can understand why travel agents are afraid of losing even more business to e-commerce if the IATA .travel proposal is granted, and consumers will have more, better, and more secure options for booking travel online.  But that's hardly a reason for denying what looks to me like a pro-competitive, pro-consumer proposal for a new option!
