I wanted to explain to lapointe, in my opinion anyway, the mystic reason why so much discussion focuses on .WEB when there will presumably be a bunch of other equally suitable gTLDs available from a bunch of other registrars.

I do know that I have read a lot of reports on poor organization, careless customer service, and disregard for the property rights of others displayed by some existing registrars, both here and other places over the past year or two.

And it makes perfect sense people would resent that kind of treatment.

That said, I don't have the energy to fully explore the .WEB issue, so I don't want to comment about either application specifically.

I believe we don't really need a bunch more unrestricted gTLDs. 

One or two broadly based gTLDs makes sense, but, yes, they certainly should be administered and controlled by companies completely separate from those controlling .COM.
