Times have changed since .com / .net domains became available. Few people to begin with used the net at the time those domains could be registered. If someone back in '89 registered net.com while majority of people not having access to the net and even more people not having a clue they could register a domain of their own (most people didn't even know what a "domain" was back then), I think it's REALLY good for them - they had a vision and understanding of what was to come.

In 1997 when IOD started taking pre-registrations for WEB the web was already very active, and there would have been many venues of making the information about such possibility very public. Obviously, however, such info wasn't very widely disseminated which is highlighted by the fact that handful of people had a chance to grab hundreds of valuable names. In 1997 if general public knew of such possibility I'm sure there would have been countless people who could see the use for new names few years down the line.
